Business as usual in Afghanistan

Jun 29, 2006 in Foreign Policy, Uncategorized

Capitalism is all the rage in Afghanistan this year. Market demand for opium poppy is sky high so permissive local warlords and subsistence level farmers are doing what they can to increase production. Directly benefitting from this spike in cultivation are Taleban and Al Qaeda functionaries that continue to control much of Afghanistan. Speaking to an Army enlisted co-worker last week who just returned from Kabul I was told that most of Afghanistan was “a Wild West town”. He described how it was possible to engage in a fire-fight within 100 yards in any direction of their base and since this administrations singular gaze has been dead set upon Iraq, Afghanistan has been left to the same groups and individuals they claimed to rid the country of.

Credibility Gap?

Jun 28, 2006 in Uncategorized

A brief visit to El Rushbo’s site reveals his rationalization of possession of erectile disfunction pills:

“I’ve been racking my brain. I’m trying to figure out how Bob Dole’s luggage got on my airplane. At any rate, ladies and gentlemen — I told the doctor, I said, ‘Look, I’m worried about the next election, not…’ A misunderstanding. Well, things are what they are.”

Ha! Get it?

It’s as if a man can’t fly down to the Dominican Republic (underage sex capital of the world) with a bottle of boner pills without everybody making such a big deal about it.  As Digby notes:

Rush should be urged to share his story with America. Here’s he is, an impotent, thrice divorced, ex-drug addict, conservative, parolee who went on a sex tour in the Caribbean and found himself rudely embarrassed for carrying recreational prescription drugs in his doctor’s name. Who can’t relate to that? This is a man who has been run through the mud and I think we would benefit from a thorough national conversation to try to understand Rush’s urgent need for sex in one of the most poverty stricken countries in the world. Wouldn’t he feel unburdened if he could share his thoughts with some of his staunch allies like James Dobson or Pat Robertson? Surely they’d be willing to hear his testimony.

The truth shall set you free, Rush.
