Yeah, no kidding. We could have done with a few Cat 770s but we had to settle for our backs instead. I am sun burned and I am exhausted.
We’re lucky in a sense. There’s an engineering college in town, the Army Corp of Engineers operates three dams and we’ve got several National Guard armories so we’ve definitely got the brain power and lots of folks showed up to volunteer and with the Coralville dam flowage closely monitored it makes estimating output and crest levels less of a mystery. When I was downtown last night city engineers were walking around with GPS and laser levels marking off the expected flood line on all affected businesses so that sand bag crews had targets. Out where we were this morning hydraulic engineers (with some help from the Carpenter’s Union) were not only setting up levee guidelines but erecting truss systems around the pumping stations that could channel seepage into pre-sunk pits with emergency sump pumps at the bottom.
Here are the coordinates to where we were if you’re familiar with Google Earth:
Something to think about. Is Iowa different? I don’t think so….
Where are all of the Hollywood celebrities holding telethons asking for help in restoring Iowa and helping the folks affected by the floods?
Where is all the media asking the tough questions about why the federal government hasn’t solved the problem? Asking where the FEMA trucks and trailers are?
Why isn’t the Federal Government relocating Iowa people to free hotels in Chicago ?
When will Spike Lee say that the Federal Government blew up the levees that failed in Des Moines ?
Where are Sean Penn and the Dixie Chicks?
Where are all the looters stealing high-end tennis shoes and big screen television sets?
When will we hear Governor Chet Culver say that he wants to rebuild a vanilla’ Iowa , because that’s the way God wants it?
Where is the hysterical 24/7 media coverage complete with reports of
cannibalism?
Where are the people declaring that George Bush hates white, rural people?
How come in 2 weeks, you will never hear about the Iowa flooding ever again?
Something to think about. Is Iowa different? I don’t think so….
Oh, I can think of a few differences. How about 1,836 confirmed fatalaties? How about $81 billion dollars in damage? How about 705 confirmed missing persons? Hurricane Katrina destroyed the entire Gulf Coast and when it was done flooding on a scale that dwarfs that which we’re experiencing in Iowa followed. What the fuck is wrong with you?
