Good news: Mike’s eye surgery was less invasive than the video link we provided, mostly involving lasers. Bad news: Surgery is required on his hand. Good news again: The response to our micro-fundraising effort will help him meet the challenge.

I think this is a terrific story about the power of the internet. Leftwing bloggers like Attaturk and rightwing bloggers like Dana Pico came together to help Mike. We got some of the most support from our political “enemies,” and having Mike’s cause make a few bounces in the Republican echo chamber was advantageous.

Some people are grousing about Obama having Rick Warren do the invocation at his inauguration. They are right about Warren’s flaws. Intellectually, he is both dishonest and deficient. Yet I understand what Obama is thinking. In saying to Warren, “We can still eat at the same table together,” he’s saying much of what I’m saying when I pat my vehemently homophobic cousin-in-law on the back. And it’s what a rightwinger is saying when he puts aside the fact that you’ve called him an idiot a dozen different ways (and perhaps proven it!) and sends some money to help when life literally kicks you in the face.

It is a testimony to things deeper.

dirty pool to group toxic Rick with Mike’s recovery! I personally would prefer that liberal presidents not break bread with people who actively work to overturn Roe & campaign for constitutional amendments against consenting adults marrying who they like, but fortunately for me, Obama’s no liberal

pretty cannily played dirty pool though I should say 🙂

You Libs are a humorous lot at times. However, I hope Mike is recovering and doing well, send our regards. And in the future, please don’t lump me in with the “Republican Echo Chamber.” The GOP has not been my style for a veeeery long time.

Our friends at Pandagon are all upset about this, with several articles on the subject. But the fact remains that Senator Obama said, during the campaign, that he favored some form of civil unions, but not same-sex marriage.

In some regards, I think we may have misjudged Mr Obama. On the right, we were afraid that he was a whacko-leftist, who was simply lying about his ideas, beliefs and policies, just to get elected; on the left, I think a lot of people thought exactly the same thing. But when it comes to Pastor Warren, Mr Obama is pretty much adhering to exactly the position he said he had. I can’t fault the man for telling the truth!

I got an e-mail from Mike last night, but it was obviously difficult for him to type. He said he’d be more communicative later.

We wish everybody on the Iowa Liberal a very Merry Christmas, and the best of luck especially to Mike.
